FAQs

With all of the therapists out there, why choose your practice?

We do therapy differently here by embracing a holistic and integrative approach to therapy that encompasses and enhances every aspect of your overall health and wellbeing.

We understand that therapy can be a scary, difficult, and daunting process, and we also know that it doesn't have to be that way.  No more “mhms,” silent nods, and cold, clinical, formal interactions with your therapist.  At Peace of Mind Therapy NYC, we want therapy to be approachable for everyone and value building authentic and genuine connections with our clients.  Our mission is to ensure therapy is a meaningful and joyful experience that fosters insight, transformation, growth, and comprehensive healing.

What distinguishes our practice is our approachable, more laid-back, proactive, innovative, collaborative, and results-driven approach, combined with our unwavering commitment to personalized and uniquely tailored care that expands awareness and facilitates significant and observable change in our clients' lives. What can I expect from the free consultation?

During our initial free 15 minute consultation, you will have the opportunity to introduce yourself, share your current needs, and ask any questions you may have in order to get a feel for who we are and how we can be of service to you. Studies show that the number one factor in determining the likelihood of change from and satisfaction in counseling is the relationship between client and counselor, so it is of the upmost importance to us that you have an opportunity to get a sense of whether we will be a good fit. If we think you're better suited to work with another therapist in our practice, we will help you schedule a free consultation with them, as well.

Are sessions done virtually or in person?

All sessions are conducted virtually online using the telemedicine platform, Doxy, which is a recurring link that can be reached on your computer, phone, or tablet.

What are the benefits of telehealth?

Telehealth offers many benefits and has become the standard method of therapy since Covid. Benefits include increased flexibility and accessibility to services regardless of geographic location and schedules. It provides convenience by eliminating travel time and costs, allowing you to attend appointments from the comfort of your homes or wherever you may be. Many clients share that they feel more comfortable than ever speaking with a therapist, as they are able to be in their own space. Additionally, telehealth enhances continuity of care, enabling regular monitoring and support, while maintaining privacy and reducing the stigma associated with seeking mental health services.

How long will it take to see results?

There are many factors which determine when results will be realized. Some of these include individual circumstances, the magnitude of the problem or goal, frequency of sessions, commitment to doing the necessary work to bring about positive change, and discipline to challenge self-defeating behavioral and thinking patterns.

When we have our free consultation and we are able to get a sense of you and your needs, we will better be able to discuss a realistic timeline. While it is often more effective to receive consistent counseling over a period of time, we understand that not every one is looking for long-term counseling, and that's ok. Depending on your unique situation, short-term counseling may be effective for you and should not deter you from reaching out and scheduling a consultation.

How participatory are you during sessions?

It depends on the therapist, client, and the session, but we generally tend to play a more active role and believe it’s important to offer psycho-education when appropriate. Since we work from an integrative and holistic perspective and use a variety of modalities and techniques, we may purposefully alter our level of participation from session to session based on individual client needs and our unique working relationship. While the seeds of change are planted during our sessions together, the actionable change happens between sessions when you have the opportunity to put your hard work into practice in your everyday life. Therefore, we aim to provide our clients with an arsenal of tools and techniques to successfully navigate through life and may provide "homework," activities, practices, and readings to help reinforce and strengthen actionable change.

How long should I commit to being in therapy?

It’s best if we schedule a consultation call to discuss this further as each person and situation is unique. In general, we recommend that people commit to a minimum of meeting once a week for 4 weeks to begin and then we can determine if continuing weekly or moving to bi-weekly is more appropriate. There are many factors which determine length and frequency of therapy, including individual circumstances, the magnitude of the problem or goal, commitment to doing the necessary work to bring about positive change, and discipline to challenge faulty behavioral and thinking patterns. While it is often more effective to receive consistent counseling over a period of time, we understand that not everyone is looking for long-term counseling, and that’s ok. Depending on your situation, short-term counseling may be effective for you and should not deter you from reaching out and scheduling a consultation.

What are your fees?

Fees range based on the type of therapy and your individual therapist.

Individual Therapy is 45 minutes and ranges from $150-$275 based on the therapist. Some therapists provide options for 60 minute sessions.

Couples Counseling is one hour and ranges from $280-$450 based on the therapist.

Family Therapy is one hour and is $500.

All therapists provide sliding scales. If you are concerned about affording our fees, please refer to the question below, "What is a sliding scale fee?"

What is a sliding scale fee?

A sliding scale fee is a payment model used to provide services at a lower rate to clients with financial need. Instead of charging a fixed rate for each session, we adjust the fee based on the client's income level and financial situation. We are proud to offer sliding scale fees to help ensure that all individuals have access to quality care.

Do you accept insurance?

Currently, we offer out-of-network billing options, providing clients with a monthly superbill to submit to their insurance company for reimbursement. Typically, out-of-network coverage involves a deductible followed by reimbursement ranging from 60% to 80% of the session fee, making out-of-pocket therapy notably affordable. For inquiries regarding your out-of-network benefits, please contact the number listed on the back of your insurance card.

Paying out of pocket for therapy offers several advantages over using insurance. Firstly, it ensures complete privacy and confidentiality, as insurance companies may require access to your therapy records for in-network reimbursement. Additionally, it allows for greater flexibility in choosing your therapist and treatment approach, without being limited by insurance networks or pre-authorization requirements. Furthermore, out-of-network benefits may provide more flexibility in terms of session frequency and treatment length, allowing for a more personalized and effective therapy experience tailored to your unique needs and goals.
